Work Trade Shift Descriptions 2024

Seed Starting & Microgreens (Tuesdays; 3-4 hr. shift during 2-6pm window) – 1 person

  • We grow our own vegetable starts for transplanting.  This task involves filling trays with potting soil, seeding and watering in those trays.  We’ll train you on seeding techniques including hand seeding, using a hand-held seed sower tool, and using a drop seeder to seed Paperpot trays.  You’ll also be responsible for thinning trays of starts as needed.

  • We seed microgreens weekly.  This task involves filling flats with soil, seeding and watering in microgreens, and setting up the trays for light deprivation/proper germination.  We’ll train you on seeding pea shoots, sunflower shoots and radish microgreens.

  • Other occasional tasks performed during this shift as time allows: weeding, bulk harvests (snap peas, tomatoes, zucchini), microgreen harvest, tomato pruning & trellising, potting up starts.

  • This shift requires attention to detail & ability to work independently.  Work is mainly under cover out of the elements and done from a standing position.  Ability to lift 30-50lb bags of potting soil is desirable, but we can work with you if this is a challenge.

  • Our main season for seed starting is April-August.  Microgreens are grown April-November.  There is an opportunity to start this work trade earlier than June and extend it longer than September if you are interested.

Harvest Crew (Fridays; 3-4 hr. shift during the 7-11am window) – 1 or 2 people

  • Help harvest veggies for our Saturday farmers market and wholesale deliveries.  We’ll train you on harvesting the following: bunching greens (kale, chard), lettuce heads, radicchio, herbs (cilantro, dill, parsley), radishes, salad turnips, carrots, beets, fennel, broccolini, cauliflower, cabbage, celery, nasturtiums, zucchini.

  • This shift is ideal for someone who likes fast-paced work, getting to be outdoors in all elements and observing seasonal change in the garden.  Attention to detail, ability to perform (and enjoy) repetitive tasks, bending at the waist and/or squatting, and lifting 30-50lbs are necessary for this shift.  You’ll sometimes work independently and sometimes as part of a team.

Wash-Pack/Market Prep (Fridays; 3-4 hr. shift during the 1-5pm window) – 1 or 2 people

  • Help wash & pack veggies for our Saturday farmers market and wholesale deliveries.  We’ll train you on washing & packing the following: baby greens, microgreens, bunching greens (kale, chard), lettuce heads, radicchio, herbs (cilantro, dill, parsley), radishes, salad turnips, carrots, beets, fennel, broccolini, cauliflower, cabbage, celery, nasturtiums, zucchini, snap peas, tomatoes, peppers.

  • This shift is ideal for someone who likes fast-paced work in a team environment.  Lots of time to jam out to some tunes and chat with us and/or your fellow work traders (just make sure to work while you talk!).  Attention to detail and the ability to perform (and enjoy) repetitive tasks are necessary for this shift.  Ability to lift 30-50 lbs. is a plus, but we can work with you if this is problematic.  Most work is done under cover and from a standing position.  Some washing tasks can be damp jobs and we recommend bringing rain gear.  We also have rain gear and aprons available to borrow.

  • Other occasional tasks performed during this shift as time allows: bulk harvests (snap peas, tomatoes, zucchini), microgreen harvest, weeding.

  • This shift requires attention to detail, ability to work independently and good communication skills (to keep us informed of your shift day/time if it is going to change week-to-week).  Work is done in the caterpillar tunnel.

  • Other occasional tasks performed during this shift as time allows: bed prep & transplanting, bulk harvests (snap peas, peppers, zucchini), weeding.
